Environmental Education

As a community-based nonprofit organization, MCRP collaborates with local businesses in the watershed and other partners to sponsor an environmental education program in 12 school districts in the Mill Creek watershed. The interdisciplinary program incorporates history, social studies, mathematics, geology, telecommunications, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and language arts. MCRP’s innovative approach to environmental education emphasizes both analytical and creative thinking and uses an action research model (data collection, problem-solving and action-taking) to collect and use information. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to help educate others about environmental issues. Emphasis focuses on developing both a conservation ethic and individual responsibility to protect and improve the local and global environment.

To date, MCRP has worked with over 25,000 students, recruited and trained over 360 teachers and community volunteers and trained over 50 local watershed residents in our on-the-job training program. These teachers, volunteers and trainees contribute their invaluable time, energy and knowledge to students throughout the school year and make our school program possible.
